Ones to watch on the opening day: League Two
As the start of the new Sky Bet League Two campaign draws ever closer, we’ve been looking at some of the top players to keep an eye on during the opening weekend.
There will again be a host of talented stars plying their trade in the division in 2019/20 – here are our ones to watch…
JAMES VAUGHAN (BRADFORD CITY)
Former Everton and Sunderland striker Vaughan joined the Bantams on a three-year deal last month, and will look to fire them back to Sky Bet League One at the first time of asking. The 30-year-old, who was released by Wigan Athletic in May, spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth. Will he open his Bradford account against Cambridge United?
ANDY COOK (MANSFIELD TOWN)
Signed from Walsall in June, Cook will bring an added goal threat to last season’s Play-Off Semi-Finalists, Mansfield. The 28-year-old scored 18 goals in all competitions in 2018/19 but couldn’t prevent Walsall’s relegation, and will now be hoping to help his new side exact revenge for that Play-Off defeat against Newport County on the opening day.
NICKY ADAMS (NORTHAMPTON TOWN)
A player who shone in Sky Bet League Two last season, Nicky Adams will be looking to do so again with a new club – one he knows all about – in 2019/20. Having been promoted with Bury as the division’s top assist maker, Adams is back at Northampton, where he was a key part of a title-winning campaign in 2015/16, and will look to carry on where he left off against Walsall.
RICHIE TOWELL (SALFORD CITY)
After having been released by Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, Towell represents a strong capture for newly promoted Salford, who will kick off their first-ever EFL campaign against Stevenage in front of the Sky Sports cameras next month. The Irishman scored 10 goals in 79 games for Rotherham, and will no doubt boost the Ammies’ ranks.
ZEKI FRYERS (SWINDON TOWN)
A summer signing for Swindon, Fryers began his career at Premier League giants Manchester United, making six appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson before heading abroad to join Belgium side Standard Liege. Still only 26, the defender’s CV also includes the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, and he’ll be looking to make an impression away to Scunthorpe United on the opening weekend.
