There was no joy for African stars Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew and Cheikhou Kouyate, as Crystal Palace succumbed 2-0 away to Chelsea in a London derby in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Eagles held the Blues 0-0 for more than half of the game at Stamford Bridge, but Tammy Abraham broke the deadlock in favour of the hosts early in the second stanza, and Christian Pulisic continued his great recent form by adding the second as Frank Lampard’s side picked up an eighth win of the season.
Elsewhere in England, Christian Atsu and Alex Iwobi appeared as substitutes in respective 2-1 wins for Newcastle United at home to Bournemouth and Everton away to Southampton, Serge Aurier started Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield United, and Wilfred Ndidi featured strongly in midfield as Leicester City trumped Arsenal 2-0 at home in the late game.
In Serie A, Ola Aina and Nicholas N’Koulou helped Torino record an emphatic 4-0 win away to Brescia, who played most of the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Ales Mateju late in the first half.
The top game in the Bundesliga saw Achraf Hakimi’s Borussia Dortmund succumb 4-0 away to Bayern Munich, while in Spain’s La Liga Geoffrey Kondogbia helped Valencia claim a 2-0 home win over former table toppers Granada.
