Kaizer Chiefs’ thrilling 3-2 win over Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates headlined the Absa Premiership action on Saturday, which also saw Chippa United pick up their first victory of the league season.
Chiefs ended a five-year wait for a league win over their arch rivals thanks to a late penalty from Daniel Cardoso at FNB Stadium, with the Buccaneers having recovered from two goals down to see the game locked at 2-2 until the dying minutes.
The Amakhosi’s victory – which was a sixth in succession and took their lead at the head of the table to 10 points – was soured somewhat by a late red card for Erick Mathoho, who will now be suspended for the Telkom Knockout semifinals later in the month.
Elsewhere on Saturday afternoon, Baroka FC won the Limpopo derby 1-0 away to Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium – thanks to an early goal from Prince Nxumalo – while 10-man Stellenbosch (defender Morgan Gould was sent off on the stroke of half time) held out for a 0-0 draw at home to Highlands Park.
The evening match at a wet and cold Princess Magogo Stadium saw Chippa United finally pick up their first win of the season, as they defeated hosts AmaZulu 2-0. William Twala netted both goals for the Chilli Boys, though they remain rooted to the bottom of the log.
